Who
Are These Jesters?
Background of the Jesters Scooter Club
Jesters
Scooter Club was established in the autumn of 2002 by three older
scooterists who had left the scene some years ago, and a young
enthusiast who was “Born in the wrong era”. From the young
enthusiasts point of view, Chris had watched Quadrophenia,
read plenty about the 60’s and 70’s and asked many questions.
That was all it took he was hooked and felt a club was needed
in Leek shortly after.
The
three older guys, Steph, Kev, and Kev had met on many occasions
and reminisced on the old times, ride-outs and close encounters
with our friends the “greasers”. That fuelled their enthusiasm
to get back on the little two strokes and pose like they
used to. Nevertheless, the four eventually decided
on a name that took the best part of four months to agree on.
By late autumn, it was agreed that the “Jesters” would meet at
“The Jester” public house in Leek. Sounds perfect, but after
just three weeks, the pub closed for good. Not too
disheartened, the four decided that the “Roebuck” public
house, in the centre of town, was to be the new home of the Jesters
Scooter club, with meetings on Thursday evenings. Word of mouth
bought a little interest, but to place an advertisement
in “Scootering” magazine was thought to be the best option.
It was thought that if we could get another three or four members
this would be great, as it happened the membership was raised
to 22 in a very short space of time.
“Gingers” egg run was the first club run, closely followed
by the Lambretta clubs 50th anniversary on the Isle of man.
Followed by “Run to the Shires”, “Brewers Droop”,
and the Isle of Wight weekend to name but a few. Overall
it was a great 2003.
In
2004 the venue changed to the Royal Oak public house, the
club membership rose to 37 members with 29 scooters, appointed
a treasurer (Stuart), and introduced it’s own beer!!! Along with
a healthy bank balance, things were certainly looking up
for the JESTERS SCOOTER CLUB.
2004
saw many events and ride outs including the annual visits to the
Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man. Towards the end of the
Scootering season the club were invited to join in with the local
town Carnival festivities 2005, a full weekend of fun to
include having our own day dedicated to all things Scootering.
This was too good an opportunity to miss, so lots of hard
work began to put the Jesters well and truly on the map.
It was decided the event should be called “Scooter-Fest” and would
take place in the town centre on Sunday 22nd May. During
many meetings with local dignitaries, businesses, and club
members it was suggested that the event could (fingers crossed)
become an annual event, so the name changed to “Scooter-Fest
1”
“Scooter-Fest 1” was a total success with an estimated 400+ scooterists
arriving from all over the country, and many accolades,
congratulations, and requests for “Scooter-Fest 2” so it
was decided that along with the Carnival Committee, Leek Town
Council, and many willing local businesses “Scooter-Fest
2” will take place in Leek Town centre on Sunday 21st May 2006.
2005
also presented the club with it’s own web site, www.jesterssc.co.uk
this was put on line after a tremendous amount of hard work from
the “Young Enthusiast” Chris. 2005 also saw the forming of the
“Mid-Shires Scooter Alliance” to which the Jesters were one of
5 founder members. The aim of the alliance to bring like minded
people together for regular meets, ride-outs, and charity functions.
